The History
We love Chinese cuisine as much as you do. Our restaurant combines the best in long-standing Chinese culinary traditions and latest gastronomic innovations.
Since 1991, our home location in Alexandria has provided unique dishes to the Alexandria Old Town community. In our restaurant, you will find a commonality centered on our core menu of dishes and the desire for strong customer satisfaction.
Shanyuan, the first Asian restaurant in the country to be awarded a Michelin Star, combines Asian flavors with Western technique to create a Forbes Travel Guide Four Star award-winning dining experience at Alexandria.
A lavish gold and jewel-toned dining space draws inspiration from elements of classical Asian architecture and design to create contemporary rooms that are rich and eclectic. Shanyuan features a view of a private garden that harbors century-old pomegranate trees and a gleaming golden dragon.

Chef Wang Wei wants you to enjoy Chinese dishes
Chef Wei, who was born in China and has been cooking professionally since he was a teenager in Hong Kong, is best known for show-stopping dishes that are as lavish as they are delicious.
With over 30 years of experience in the most sought-after kitchens in the world, Executive Chef Wang Wei draws upon his classical culinary training and extensive pedigree, creating modern, flavorful and signature dishes.
Chef Wei opened Shanyuan in April 1991 and it remains a hotspot and staple for a virtual “who’s who” of the music, film and sports industries, not to mention politicos, CEOs and an array of additional DC influencers and local east siders.
